So You Want To Adopt Your New Best Friend

The Humane Society of the High Plains will consider adoptive families in the Hays and surrounding areas.  Our goal is to make the best match taking into consideration the animal's background and your family's needs. Every animal is different: personality, temperament, energy, comfort with kids and other animals, medical needs and more. We take all these factors into consideration when considering potential adopters. We do our best to match the right animal with the right adoptive home because we want this to be the pet's permanent home.

OUR PROCESS

We appreciate you wanting to bring a animal into your home. In order for us to find the right pet for you, we need you to submit an adoption application.

Submitting an adoption application does not guarantee adoption.

  • The Humane Society of the High Plains does not adopt animals sight unseen and all adoptions must be finalized in person at The Humane Society of the High Plains.
  • The Humane Society of the High Plains does not place holds on our adoptable pets. All adoptions are considered first come, first served. If multiple potential adopters arrive at the same time and wish to adopt the same animal a drawing will be held from the approved applicants.
  • Adoption fees range from $40 to $90 and does not include the additional cost of spay/neuter deposits.
  • A refundable $50 Spay/Neuter deposit is required to adopt any intact animals from The Humane Society of the High Plains. According to KS Statute § 47-1731 the prospective owner signs an agreement to have the dog or cat spayed or neutered and deposits with the pound or animal shelter funds not less than the lowest nor more than the highest cost of spaying or neutering in the community. Any funds deposited pursuant to such an agreement shall be refunded to such person upon presentation of a written statement signed by a licensed veterinarian that the dog or cat has been spayed or neutered. If such person does not reclaim the deposit within six months after receiving custody of the animal, the pound or animal shelter shall keep the deposit and may reclaim the unspayed or unneutered animal.
