Meet Velvet! This playful girl is finally ready to go to her forever home! She is an 8 week old German Shepherd/Labrador mix.

Velvet may look familiar to you, as when she first came to the shelter she became quite the hot topic. One busy weekend, our front doors opened and a box was placed inside before the owner took off. Inside that box was this little angel - only five weeks old at the time, and too young to be separated from her mom. For the past few weeks we've been taking care of her, making sure she was healthy and eating okay on her own. Now, she's finally old enough to get out of the shelter and into a home where she will never be abandoned again.

Miss Velvet is a little handful! She's very active, and is at that perfect puppy stage of always getting herself into trouble. Even though she's tiny now, she is going to grow into a big dog, so her owners need to be prepared to handle her when she's fully grown. Velvet has already proven to be extremely intelligent, which is what you would expect from these breeds. During the big snowstorm in Hays an employee took her home for a few days to ensure she would be taken care of, and within one night she learned to pee on the tile floor and not the carpet. Once she goes home with someone that has the time to potty train her, she shouldn't give you too much trouble. With her being so young, she is at the perfect age to start training to get her on her best behavior!

Velvet met some big dogs while she was being fostered, and she did very well with them. If they ever got too rough playing with her, she had no problem letting them know exactly how she felt! Velvet is full of attitude, and she wants what she wants when she wants it - and she will make sure she gets it! Velvet has also met some small dogs here at the shelter, and did great with them as well. She hasn't spent a lot of time with cats, but she does seem very interested in them. Continued training and socialization will be important to ensure she stays well-adjusted. Velvet also hasn't been around kids at the shelter. She's very playful and we think she would like having some kids to hang out with, but she is very much in the biting stage of puppyhood. Those sharp puppy teeth hurt, and she should be supervised around children until she can learn to play gentle.

Velvet has received her first round of vaccinations and is ready to go home! We know when she first arrived a lot of people fell in love, so don't miss out on your chance to take this girl home - stop by and meet her today!
