Meet Winston, the sweetest boy in town!
Winston is a one year old neutered Poodle/Coonhound mix. We've had lots of time with Winston to get to know him, and he is truly a dog to melt your heart.
Winston found his way back to the shelter this February in pretty rough shape. Winston was less than half of what his body weight should be, and had deep open sores on his feet. Of course, we immediately jumped in to do what we could to help our boy feel better. We have spent the past few months working with a veterinarian to ensure Winston is receiving the care he needs. Now, after a lot of dedication, Winston is finally ready to find a forever home where he can learn what true love means.
Despite his previous situation, where some dogs may have turned mean, Winston has stayed incredibly loving. Even when he felt his worst, he wanted nothing more than to be curled up in someone's lap. Winston would be a great fit for someone with a lot of love to give. Please keep in kind, though, that trauma from his past can affect how he sees the world. Certain situations can make Winston nervous, and his owner will need to be patient as Winston adjusts to his new home.
Now that Winston is feeling better, he has become a very energetic boy. He's not fully out of the puppy stage yet, and will need lots of activity to keep him healthy. Winston also has not received much, if any, training. He is not housebroken, and does not know any commands. His owner will need to put in work to get Winston on his best behavior. Be aware, though, that you may have to adjust your training techniques to fit Winston. With his history, he's not going to feel comfortable with yelling, and will need a gentler hand.
Winston has been around dogs before and absolutely loves them. With his high energy, he may not be the best fit for dogs that like their personal space, as Winston doesn't know yet how to respect boundaries. Winston has also met kids before and did great with them as well, but again, he is very energetic and could accidentally knock small children over. Winston, however, does not do good with cats, and will not be adopted out to any homes with them. He's not aggressive towards them, but likes to chase and will snatch them given the chance.
While Winston is looking a lot better than when he first came in, he still needs some work. He isn't his ideal weight yet, so his future owner will need to continue helping him gain those last few pounds. While his sores have healed well, his owner will also need to be careful they don't re-open while they heal the rest of the way.
Winston has received his first round of vaccinations and is finally ready to find his forever home! If you think you can be the safe space Winston needs, then stop by and meet him today!
