Meet Jack!

Jack is an eight year old neutered male German Shepherd.  This sweet and exuberant dog came to us when his elderly owner could no longer properly care for him.  Jack was previously just an ol' country boy.  He spent most of his time chained outdoors, and is ready to spend his golden years finally living in stlye! This boy has such a sweet soul, he deserves a forever home where he will be pampered like a prince!

Jack is a happy boy who greatly enjoys the company of people. Some dogs take a while to adjust to the shelter, but Jack settled in almost immediately! His first day here, he was already ready to chase us in the yard and play all day. Jack's experience with children is pretty limited. He's loved all of the kids he's met, but he's never lived with any. It is important to note that Jack is a very big boy, and could easily knock small children over. Likewise, he's met other dogs and cats, but he has not spent any significant time with other animals. We recommend a meet and greet with any pets or kids in the home prior to adoption so you can be sure it's a good fit.

This handsome guy may be inching toward the mature side, but don't let that number fool ya!  Jack is still energetic and has a zest for life.  Meeting him, you would never guess that he's as old as he is.  Given his history, this goofy pup has had essentially zero training.  He will need work on what the expectations are for him, as far as obedience and potty training and such are concerned.  He is eager to please though, and there have also been studies which show that, contrary to popular belief, older dogs can actually be easier to train than many puppies, due to a more developed attention span! Jack can tackle on any challenge as along as he has a patient owner who is willing to show him the ropes and teach him how to be the best boy possible. Jack absolutely loves food, which will be a big help in training him! Like anything though, it also comes with a down side.  Jack can sometimes engage in the habit of food guarding.  He gets uncomfortable if you try to take food away from him or if other animals try to sneak in and nab it.  These are things that can be worked with and worked upon, but owners need to be very mindful about it and take the necessary steps to feed him separately and work on altering the behavior.  Another con regarding Jack's love of food is his weight.  Jack isn't massively obese by any means, but he's a bit pudgy and could stand to lose a bit. His adopters might have to keep an eye on his food consumption to make sure he gets to (and maintains) a healthy weight.

Jack is already neutered and has been given his first round of vaccinations.  This means he is officially up for adoption and eager to see what adventures lie in store for him next!  If interested in potentially adopting this affectionate and loveable pooch, stop by the shelter to meet him and see if you think it's a match!
