I've found my furever family!

Hi! My Name Is Maggie

We're happy to tell you that Maggie has a new furever home.
Please visit our Available Dogs Page to see the pups currently available.

Maggie is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club! Members of this club have been at the shelter for over 30 days. To help them find a home, we have discounted their adoption fee. Please give Maggie a second look!

Meet Maggie May!  This little sweetheart is a nine year old Dachshund/Chihuahua mix.  She is a tad reserved as she gets to know someone, but she gains trust quickly, and once she does, look out!  She'll be your best friend in the world at that point and is always excited to see her favorite person.

Maggie came here through no fault of her own when she was rehomed online and ended up not truly fitting the description listed.  While Maggie is old enough to be a bit of a couch potato, she does have a lot of energy in her yet, and she greatly enjoys exploring, especially new smells!  Despite being fairly laid back in all other respects, Maggie does have some separation anxiety and would be best with a retired person or someone who is home enough that she doesn't have to sit alone in a kennel all day. Since Maggie's most recent owner didn't have her for long, we don't know much about her history. We don't know if she's lived with children before, but here she seems to be nervous around littles. She doesn't like kids that get in her face or grab at her, and prefers that only older humans interact with her. Maggie will not be a good fit for home with small children that can't respect her space. Maggie also can be picky about her dog friends. She was actually adopted but sadly had to be returned as she wasn't getting along with another dog in the home. Her adopter said that it seemed to be a jealousy issue, as Maggie didn't seem to like when the other dog got attention or treats. Here at the shelter, though, we have found Maggie a dog buddy that she gets along great with! The jealousy hasn't been an issue, and it's very heartwarming to see Maggie play like a young pup again. With her being selective, though, we would like for her to meet any canine sin the home prior to adoption. Maggie has met our office cats a few times and never seemed to mind them, and usually just ignored them.

Maggie is getting up there in age, and she has some special needs. She recently had surgery to remove a few old teeth, and will need to be on a soft food diet for probably the rest of her life. Just be prepared to spoil this girl like the queen she is!

We've been told that Maggie has had some degree of potty training, but she still needs some work in this area to be considered fully housebroken.  Whoever takes her will need to be prepared to put in the effort for further training and willing to clean up some messes until she is consistently potty-ing where she is supposed to.

This spunky gal may have some grays. but she is still full of life and greatly looking forward to her next chapter. There's nothing more fulfilling than nurturing a dog through their golden years.  If you think you may be the family Maggie should spend the rest of her life with, stop by the shelter to meet her and see if it's a match!
