I'm ready for my new family!

Hi! My Name Is Maggie

I'm Available

Maggie is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club! Members of this club have been at the shelter for over 30 days. To help them find a home, we have discounted their adoption fee. Please give Maggie a second look!

Meet Maggie May!  This little sweetheart is a nine year old Dachshund/Chihuahua mix.  She is a tad reserved as she gets to know someone, but she gains trust quickly, and once she does, look out!  She'll be your best friend in the world at that point and is always excited to see her favorite person.

Maggie came here through no fault of her own when she was rehomed online and ended up not truly fitting the description listed.  While Maggie is old enough to be a bit of a couch potato, she does have a lot of energy in her yet, and she greatly enjoys exploring, especially new smells!  Despite being fairly laid back in all other respects, Maggie does have some separation anxiety and would be best with a retired person or someone who is home enough that she doesn't have to sit alone in a kennel all day.  Maggie has not had a lot of exposure to children, but her reactions at the shelter so far have been positive.  We are requiring that Maggie go to a dog-free home, as she does have some jealousy issues that arise toward other dogs in the home when they receive attention.  It's severe enough that we believe she would do best without other canines who steal the show and result in her reacting this way.  We can't say how she would respond to a cat in the home; oftentimes, this can be very species specific.  It's certainly possible that she has a bit of a envious bone toward all creatures, but it's equally possible she would act completely differently toward the sight of a cat being doted on vs. another dog.  Regardless, adopters should be mindful of this if they have a resident feline and must closely monitor interactions in the beginning.  We can always do a meet and greet with your own cat too, though these type of behaviors often are not demonstrated in a shelter setting, and the meet and greet may not reveal to us for sure one way or the other. We don't know if Maggie has lived with kids before, but here at the shelter she has not seemed to be their biggest fan. She might do fine with older children that can respect her space, but we will require that any children in the home come out to meet Maggie prior to adoption to make sure it's the right match.

Maggie is getting up there in age, and she has some special needs. She recently had surgery to remove a few old teeth, and will need to be on a soft food diet for probably the rest of her life. Just be prepared to spoil this girl like the queen she is!

We've been told that Maggie has had some degree of potty training, but she still needs some work in this area to be considered fully housebroken.  Whoever takes her will need to be prepared to put in the effort for further training and willing to clean up some messes until she is consistently potty-ing where she is supposed to.

This spunky gal may have some grays. but she is still full of life and greatly looking forward to her next chapter. There's nothing more fulfilling than nurturing a dog through their golden years.  If you think you may be the family Maggie should spend the rest of her life with, stop by the shelter to meet her and see if it's a match!
